Diabetes Mellitus, or as it is commonly referred to “diabetes” is a severe and widespread condition that is extremely common in the western world. This condition is considered to be a growing epidemic in the developed world and is currently one of the greatest strains on the world’s healthcare. Diabetes is one of the great health crises of the 21st century. Medical Diabetic Supplies can help.

While those afflicated with diabetes can have varying degrees of it, from mild to the most severe, diabetes itself is related to regulation of insulin. Ingesting sugars causes a rise in insulin that in a normally functioning body is processed without complication. With diabetes, insulin response is impaired.

While all forms of diabetes are treatable, there is no singular cure or permanent solution to the condition. Since insulin became available for medical use in 1921, the condition is largely manageable and can be contained via a regiment of blood sugar testing and insulin therapy. This form of lifestyle management can allow diabetic patients to lead relatively normal lives.

This disease should not be treated lightly. Bodily complications can arise even in those who eat appropriate, test carefully, and administer their insulin as needed. Hypoglycemia is a mild body reaction, however, this can progress to coma. Occasionally there are individuals who experience tissue loss and even death from diabetes. The majority of the time these possibles are only evident in the most severe cases of diabetes mellitus.

There are opinions in the medical field that involve a pancreatic transplant as a form of cure for some diabetes. It’s believed that replacing the organ that produces insulin, the pancreas, with reestablish the patient’s ability to produce and manage insulin. This “cure”, which remains theoretical, would only resolve certain types and cases of diabetes. To date, a transplant is not easily accessible or practical and is greatly impossible for most diabetic patients.

Diabetes as a condition is inherently genetic. While type 1 diabetes is usually a hereditary trait that is set off by a viral infection or environmental factor, type 2 diabetes is almost entirely inherited through genetics. Regardless of what type of diabetes is present, they both share common genetic backgrounds.

Screening for diabetes is usually highly effective and conclusive and is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The earlier a person discovers that they have diabetes the faster they can get it under control before the condition escalates and has serious complications for the patient. For this reason, it’s important to undergo diabetes testing. You should seek Diabetics.

While there are certainly deadlier diseases and conditions in the world of medicine, there are few with the impact of diabetes. Diabetes affects everyone, young child to senior citizen, and the societal implications are reaching every level. Key to living with diabetes is Medical Diabetic Supply.

Today, diabetes now affects around 16 million Americans and every year, approximately 800,000 new cases are diagnosed. Diabetes is a disease that attacks everyone. It can affect any one be it children, men, women or elderly. It is also a disease that spares no race. Whether you are black, white, Hispanic, Asian, or European, diabetes can affect you. This is why you need to know about the basics of living with diabetes.

First of all, this disease is the leading cause of kidney failure. It can also cause blindness, and can significantly increase the risk of you getting heart diseases, stroke and even birth defects. Amputations are also common in diabetics and it can significantly shorten the life expectancy by up t 15 years.

If you or someone you love is suffering from diabetes, then you have to know what you are up against in order for you to know how to live a normal life with the disease.

At first, you may be overwhelmed and get depressed upon knowing that you or someone you love has diabetes. You may even feel that this is a death sentence. But, you have to consider that you feel this because of your ignorance for the disease. Although diabetes still has no cure, you will see that there are ways on how you can properly manage it in order for you or for the person close to you who is affected with the disease live a more normal life.

You need to keep in mind that even with diabetes a person can still live a full life. All it takes is extra care and proper management of the disease. The first thing you need to remember about diabetes management is the diet. The diet plays an important role in the life of a diabetic. You will require a meal plan for you by taking advice from a dietitian as well as the doctor.

In most cases, you will find that diabetics will have several meals a day. Keeping aside breakfast, lunch and dinner, you will see that small snacks are needed in between. The meals should be taken at the same time every single day in order to help keep the body on a schedule and also regulate the blood sugar levels in the body. Skipping meals and snacks may lead to large swings in blood sugar readings, which is a very dangerous thing for diabetics.

In order for the blood sugar level within normal range, a diabetic should balance the food they eat with the insulin that the body gets from exercising as well as from injections. You can monitor the blood sugar level with a device called glucose meter. This will be able to keep you informed on the current blood sugar levels in the body, which can be very helpful in planning meals.

Diabetics should follow a certain meal plan as their body works differently from the person not suffering from diabetes. A diabetic should have low carbohydrate, low salt, low sugar, and high fiber diet. This will help regulate the blood sugar levels in the body and help prevent drastic changes in it.

Preventing or minimizing complications is your goal when managing diabetes. By strictly following the proper diet and proper eating schedule, you can be sure that you will be able to live a normal and full life.

Most times it will go away once the baby is born but sometimes it can continue afterwards. Other women are already diabetic when they fall pregnant.

Here are some tips on how to look after yourself through a pregnancy complicated by diabetes

The classic signs of diabetes include: excessive eating, excessive peeing and excessive thirst. But something else to look out for and to pay particular attention to for a more comfortable pregnancy are what happens to the feet and how you can take care of them

There are so many changes the body undergoes during pregnancy that it becomes easy to ignore the changes in the feet. During pregnancy the body releases hormones that allow the ligaments to relax in the birth canal. The ligaments in the feet also relax, causing the foot to lengthen and widen. Many will complain of a shoe size increase by one or two sizes. In most circumstances, this flattening and widening of the foot is benign and no problems result.

In the diabetic, this change in foot size is important to recognize. Despite the increase in foot size, many moms will continue to wear the same size shoes. As a diabetic, properly fitting shoes are of utmost importance. Increased pressure on the foot can cause areas of rub or irritation and potentially result in ulceration. Once there is an ulceration, one is at risk for infection, delayed healing and further diabetic foot complications.

The worst case scenario would be amputation and possible death so it is important to take foot care seriously from the beginning to prevent this happening

Diabetic neuropathy is the single greatest risk factor for developing foot ulcerations. Neuropathy is the loss of sensation in the feet commonly caused by diabetes. Many individuals will develop neuropathy before they are diagnosed with diabetes. Others will develop neuropathy years after being diagnosed with diabetes. Luckily, gestational diabetes is not typically associated with neuropathy.

Gestational diabetes is usually temporary

Unfortunately, type I diabetics develop neuropathy much earlier than type II diabetics and may have neuropathy during their pregnancy. Regardless of the type of diabetes, it is still extremely important to have the feet evaluated to assess the status of the nerves. Even mild neuropathy increases the risk of ulceration. Wearing shoes which are too small causes an increase in friction and an increased risk of skin breakdown.

Make sure you wear comfortable roomy shoes during pregnancy

Wearing properly fitting shoes during and after pregnancy is of particular importance. Although the ligaments relax in the foot during pregnancy, they do not stay relaxed. The post-pregnancy foot is at higher risk for developing foot problems. There are multiple reasons contributing to the increased risk. The flattened foot places excess stress on the ligament that holds up the arch. The weight gain from pregnancy places excess stress on the feet. Moms are also carrying their baby, added weight which transmits to the feet. Moms are staying at home more often and walking around in slippers and flexible shoes which are generally not supportive.

To decrease your chances of foot problems during and after pregnancy follow these steps:

Check your feet everyday: This is an absolute necessity if you are a type I diabetic or if you have diagnosed neuropathy. It is a good habit to practice. Look for cuts, sores, bruises, openings or areas of irritation. Remember, if your nerves are not functioning properly, then you may not feel everything in your feet. If you cannot reach your feet, have a family member check your feet or place a mirror on the floor and put your feet over it.

Check your shoes before you put your foot in them.

Don’t walk around barefoot: Wear a supportive shoe, one that has a rigid sole and bends only where the foot bends (at the toes). If a shoe seems too confined, find a slipper which has a semi-rigid sole, or try a clog or slip-in shoe with a more rigid sole. The remaining aspect of the shoe can be soft and flexible and allow for swelling, but the sole should be rigid from the heel to the ball of the foot.

Buy shoes that fit your feet: Be aware of the changes your feet are going through. The feet are most likely widening and lengthening. Make sure the shoes don’t cramp the toes. Your feet will not shrink after the birth.

Watch out for folds in your socks: A simple fold can cause rub or irritation on your feet. Swelling will be greater by the end of the day and the small crease that didn’t bother you in the morning can rub an open sore or blister on the toes. Serious consequences in diabetics can include ulceration and infection.

Dry your feet and between toes after showers: Increased moisture between your toes can lead to skin breakdown and eventual ulceration.

Don’t be a victim of fashion: Most moms will avoid high fashion during pregnancy, but many try squeezing into that strappy heel after. Wearing high heeled shoes puts excess stress on the ball of the foot, cramps the toes and increases the chances of ankle sprains. Tight shoes will increase the chance of ulceration for those with neuropathy.

Test the bath water before stepping in: If you have neuropathy, you will not recognize when the temperature is too hot. Check the water by inserting your hand into the water to wrist depth.

Don’t use a heating pad on your feet: Although the idea of heat on your feet may sound soothing after a long day, the heat will increase swelling and inflammation. Sore feet respond better to ice. Roll your foot over a frozen sports water bottle to help ease the achiness in the arch. Wear a sock while doing this and don’t put ice directly on your feet. The heating pad can cause burns in those who have neuropathy.

Don’t use any medication on the skin: Be careful of topical medications during pregnancy and during breast-feeding. Consult your doctor before use. Don’t use medicated corn pads from the local drug stores if you have neuropathy.

Visit your podiatrist: At the first sign of a problem, make an appointment with your podiatrist. Prevention is much easier than treatment.

How does a diabetic know if they have poor circulation in their feet?

There is an increased incidence of peripheral arterial disease in diabetics. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is defined as a narrowing or blockage of arteries that results in poor blood flow to your legs. When you walk or exercise, your leg muscles do not get enough blood flow and you can get painful cramps.

Peripheral arterial disease is also called peripheral vascular disease or simply poor circulation. Just like clogged arteries in the heart, clogged arteries in the legs mean you are at risk for having a heart attack or stroke.

Plaque buildup in the legs does not always cause symptoms, so many people can have PAD and not know it. People who do experience symptoms, such as pain or cramping in the legs, often do not report them, believing they are a natural part of aging or due to another cause.

One in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 had PAD and it is estimated that over 8 million are undiagnosed. Early detection of PAD has been shown to save limbs and lives, so if you have any of the risk factors you should undergo PAD screening by your podiatrist yearly or more often if symptoms occur.

The exact cause of plaque buildup in the limbs is unknown in most cases. However, there are some conditions and habits that raise your chance of developing poor circulation.

Your risk increases if you:

Are over the age of 50.

Smoke or used to smoke. Those who smoke or have a history of smoking have up to four times greater risk of PAD.

Have diabetes. One in every three people over the age of 50 with diabetes is likely to have PAD.

Have high blood pressure. Also called hypertension, high blood pressure raises the risk of developing plaque in the arteries.

Have high blood cholesterol. Excess cholesterol and fat in your blood contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries, reducing or blocking blood flow to your heart, brain, or limbs.

Have a personal history of vascular disease, heart attack, or stroke. If you have heart disease, you have a one in three chance of also having PAD.

Are African American. African Americans are more than twice as likely to have PAD as their white counterparts.

What are the symptoms of PAD?

Most patients with PAD have little or no symptoms until the disease is advanced; that’s why screening exams are so important. Those who do experience symptoms have reported these typical signs and symptoms:

Claudication: fatigue, heaviness, tiredness, cramping in the leg muscles (buttocks, thigh, or calf) that occurs during activity such as walking or climbing stairs. This pain or discomfort goes away once the activity is stopped and during rest.

Rest Pain: pain in their legs at night that often disturbs their sleep

Wounds or sores that heal very slowly or not at all

Color changes to the skin of their feet and lower legs

Cold, pale feet and legs

Decreased hair and nail growth on their feet

How is PAD Diagnosed?

Your podiatrist will start with checking the pulses in your foot and ankle, examining the skin for changes and wounds that are poorly healing. Often an ABI (ankle-brachial index) is evaluated which compares the blood pressure in your arms to your ankles. A Doppler exam may be ordered. This test uses sound waves to measure the blood flow in the veins and arteries in your arms and legs. If any of these exams are abnormal, your podiatrist may refer you to a vascular surgeon to discuss options for treatment.

How is PAD Treated?

The overall goals for treating PAD are to reduce any symptoms, improve quality of life and mobility, and prevent heart attack, stroke, and amputation. There are three main approaches to treating PAD: making lifestyle changes; taking medication; and in some cases, having a special procedure or surgery. Your physicians will determine the best treatment options for you, based on your medical history and the severity of your condition.

How Can I Prevent PAD If I am Diabetic?

The cornerstone of prevention is lifestyle changes

Exercise is very important and you should aim for 30-45 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each and every day.

Stop smoking immediately and ask your doctor for help if you find you cannot.

Keep your cholesterol and blood glucose levels down. Aim for a HgA1C of 6!

Keep your blood pressure in the normal range.

Decrease stress.

If you are overweight or obese, aim for a normal weight and again, ask your doctor for help! A diet low in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol is also helpful.

More than anything, talk to your doctors about a comprehensive treatment plan for your diabetes that also decreases your PAD risks.

One in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 had PAD and the incidience is higher in diabetics. Most patients have little or no symptoms until it is too late! Early detection of PAD has been shown to save limbs and lives, so if you have any of the risk factors you should undergo PAD screening by your podiatrist yearly or more often if symptoms occur.
